Episode 78 – NPC’s, Allies, and Adversaries

NPCs

NPCs; they are the lifeblood of any adventure, campaign, or gaming world.  Sure, the story is created by the actions of the Player Characters, but without NPCs, who would the heroes turn to for help, sell all their (sometimes ill-gotten) treasures off too, or shiv prison-style in a back-alley for some easy XP?  Join us this week as we jump back almost two decades to discuss some of the memorable NPCs – allies, adversaries, and otherwise – from our epic AD&D 2nd Edition campaign!  Ready your fantasy cellphones, lock down that split-personality disorder, and for the sake of your family take out a life insurance policy as you prepare for an all new episode of Monkey in the Cage!

Episode 31 – Failure in the Geek Game

Being a geek is an investment in time, money, and most importantly interest.  But what happens when the time isn’t available or the interest isn’t there?  With so many things to keep up on, past and present, it can often be difficult to stay on top of what-is-what and to be as informed and exposed as possible.  Join us this week as we reveal some of our personal shortcomings in geekdom.  Whether it’s geek-centric things we flat out don’t enjoy or haven’t had the pleasure of getting our hands on, we all come clean on our holes in the geek game.  Don’t be hatin’, but get your hate-mail ready (and remember to send it to Matt) after this week’s episode of Monkey in the Cage.

Episode 30 – The Avengers

Talk about well worth the wait!  This past weekend, Joss Whedon’s The Avengers finally opened coast to coast and BLOW’D IT UP!!!  Not only did it SMASH box office records (to the tune of $207 million on it’s opening weekend), it also damn near melted Matt’s eyeballs and brain because it was so epic (and because he watched it without his glasses).  Join us this week as we have a spoiler-ific discussion about the movie and all of its superhero glory.  Step away from the heavy bags, put Mjölnir on the shelf, have Jarvis hold all of you calls, and definitely DO NOT GET ANGRY as you listen to this weeks all new episode of Monkey in the Cage.  AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!!

Episode 27 – Zombies, Zombies Everywhere!

With the meteoric success of The Walking Dead and the subsequent weekly zombie vacuum left on Sunday nights, we here at the podcast (and most everyone else out there in pop-culture land) can’t seem to get enough of the rotting, cannibalistic dead come to f*ck up the humdrum routine of society.  Joining us this week are two very special guests  – actor/writer and voice of Red Dead Redemption’s Bill Williamson, Steve J. Palmer as well as comic artist Guy LeMay, creator of Z-Blade XX, Zombie Headhunter, and The Entity Knights – as we discuss zombie movies, games, and the genre in general.  Stock up on supplies, shine up your bullets, and pay attention because you’re going to want to change your zombie apocalypse plan after listening to this week’s episode of Monkey in the Cage!

Unplugging a New Generation of Gamer

Back in December of 1999, my sister gave birth to my oldest nephew.  That evening at the hospital, I can almost guarantee that my brother-in-law and I had a discussion that one day, we would have a new permanent member to our gaming group.  Yes, it’s true, his fate was sealed before he was even a day old.  Jump ahead to a late last year, and the time had come to finally introduce him (and his siblings) to the world of Dungeons & Dragons.

“Wait, that doesn’t look right.” – Hardware Mods

I lack any form of creativity, but I love people that are able to imagine something and then create a physical manifestation of it. This goes double so for someone who can take an existing product and make it that much more awesome by “modding” it.

One of the top modders in the game today is Ben Heckendorn. He is most well known for taking a modern console, hacking it to pieces, creating a new housing, adding a monitor, and making it a portable game system. His “laptop” Xbox 360 took the Internet by storm and he has been an Internet celebrity ever since.

Ben has also been altruistic in his efforts with modding. He created a one handed Xbox 360 controller for a serviceman that was injured in Iraq.

When I was growing as a PC gamer, case modding was all the rage. People would try to come up with the craziest ways to show off their PCs at LAN parties, even to the point were case mod competitions were created. One of the most unique ones I have seen in a long time is this intricate case build from wood.

And now finally, the best mod of them all.
