READY PLAYER ONE: A Futuristic Trip Down Memory Lane

I’d heard rumblings of this book for some time now, basically that it was a gorge fest of nostalgia porn for anyone who grew up in the 80’s and early 90’s. I approached the book eagerly and was almost immediately rewarded for this decision. Let me say this, nostalgia porn barely covers it as this little novel packs a closed fist punch to the face of pop culture references, gaming nods, and full on geekery that never failed to satisfy me.

Biggest pro of being the unpaid Monkey Intern: Having an excuse to go see 3-d action movies.

Biggest con of being the unpaid Monkey Intern: I did mention “unpaid”, right? Can I at least use this as a tax write-off? I mean, it was $13.50 for primetime with a 3-d upcharge…can’t someone toss the interns of the world a bone here?

$200 million.

Let me make one thing clear: I’m not defending John Carter to the grave. I’m not here to tell you it’s the greatest movie of the year, let alone the decade. But (despite my above rant to the contrary), I don’t regret paying a small fortune to see it in theaters.

Episode 12 – New Year Nostalgia

The New Year is finally upon us.  2011 brought some good times for us here at Monkey in the Cage, namely the birth of our wicked cool podcast (that’s for any fans we may have in Boston).  But, as awesome as 2011 was, 2012 is going to be a thousand times better.  This year is going to be a geeks dream year come true – everything from video games and movies to conventions and podcasts.  Like everyone else, we look forward to the new year and what it brings, but at the same time, we can’t help but take a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

This week, as everyone is looking forward, we’re looking back.  Join us as we talk about the a crap load of things from our childhood and adolescence that we both love an miss.  Be it cereals, tv shows, cartoons, or professional wrestling, nothing is off-limits as we babble on and on and commit the cardinal sin of dating ourselves and feeling old.  Let your ears take a listen and your mind reminisce on the things that helped make us the geeks we are!
