The Holiday Movie Season is Upon Us!

Now that I’ve put on about fifty pounds and will be fighting off a tryptophan coma until New Year’s, it is officially the holiday season!  With Santa and Rudolph still weeks away, what is a geek to do in the meantime?  Go to the movies of course!  Here’s a couple brief looks at some of the holiday movies I’m looking forward to this year.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Robert Downey Jr. continues his career renaissance as he reunites with co-star Jude Law and director Guy Ritchie to once again play the world’s greatest detective.  In the sequel to the 2009 blockbuster, Holmes and Dr. Watson investigate the questionable death of the crown prince of Austria and soon find themselves embroiled in a continent spanning game of cat and mouse with the equally intelligent and infinitely devious Professor Moriarty, played by Jared Harris.  Personally, I loved the first film and use it as heavy inspiration for my upcoming game, so I think this sequel is going to be the perfect kick in the pants for me to get my game off the ground.  The film hits theaters December 16th, and in my opinion, if you aren’t down with Sherlock Holmes, then you ain’t no friend of mine!

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

The fourth installment in the Mission: Impossible series finds Tom Cruise‘s Ethan Hunt and the entire IMF disavowed after the terrorist bombing of the Kremlin.  Hunt and his crew of rogue secret agents – Brandt (Jeremy Renner), Benji (Simon Pegg), Jane (Paula Patton), Luther (Ving Rhames) and Trevor (Josh Holloway) – work to clear their, and the entire agencies name.  I remember seeing the original Mission: Impossible in theaters back in 1996 and loved every minute of it, but passed on Mission: Impossible II and have yet to see it (I think it was a combination of Tom Cruise’s hair and John Woo at the helm that made me pass).  The new film hits theaters December 21st, and if Ghost Protocol ends up being anything like Mission: Impossible III, it should be a damn good ride!

The Adventures of Tintin

Based on the widely popular (in Europe) Tintin comic series started in the late 1920’s by Belgian artist Georges Rémi (also known as Hergé), the soon to be released film, directed by Steven Speilberg and starring Jaime Bell, Daniel Craig, and Andy Serkis brings the adventures of Tintin, Snowy, and Captain Haddock to life through what looks to be an awesome implementation of full motion-capture animation.  I’m not going to pretend like I know anything about the Tintin character or the world he exists in, but it’s hard to argue with Speilberg, plus the trailer looks pretty awesome.  I predict that this movie is going to be an underrated sleeper hit this holiday season.

Alright… That’s all… time for the semi-permanent turkey coma.  Happy Black Friday!!!
