Episode 78 – NPC’s, Allies, and Adversaries

NPCs

NPCs; they are the lifeblood of any adventure, campaign, or gaming world.  Sure, the story is created by the actions of the Player Characters, but without NPCs, who would the heroes turn to for help, sell all their (sometimes ill-gotten) treasures off too, or shiv prison-style in a back-alley for some easy XP?  Join us this week as we jump back almost two decades to discuss some of the memorable NPCs – allies, adversaries, and otherwise – from our epic AD&D 2nd Edition campaign!  Ready your fantasy cellphones, lock down that split-personality disorder, and for the sake of your family take out a life insurance policy as you prepare for an all new episode of Monkey in the Cage!

Episode 76 – Heroes: Part Deux

magneto-anyone-can-be-a-hero-demotivator
So, way, way, WAY back in Episode 8, we here at To-Ag Studios talked Heroes and Villains.  Seeing as the Monkeys still had their podcasting training wheels on, we approached two very broad and interesting topics with the reckless abandon of Hulk and Wolverine on a bender.  So now, 68 weeks later, we have reconvened our Monkey council in order to once again discuss the hero figure and why we love them.  Draw down your cowls, make some therapy appointments, and get your butt out of retirement as were headed for round 2 to discuss Heroes (NOT the show) on a brand new episode of Monkey in the Cage!

Episode 61 – Gaming With Friends vs. Strangers

Gaming as a hobby and the experiences it brings can swing from one end of the spectrum to the other.  Be it tabletop RPGs, online gaming, or a good old-fashioned roundabout with a board game, there are always inherent pros and cons when it comes to living the gamer lifestyle (or life in general).  We here at To-Ag Studios have been fortunate to have maintained a core gaming group, but what’s a solitary gamer to do when a local group isn’t available?  Join us this week as we discuss the process of gaming with strangers and offer our insights on how both enjoy the positive experiences as well as survive the not so positive ones.  So, pop those social anxiety pills, make sure your PING is decent, and definitely DON’T smell like cold-cuts and prepare yourself for a new episode of Monkey in the Cage.

Episode 48 – How Entertainment Influences Itself

Do you ever find yourself watching a movie, reading a book, or playing a game and thinking to yourself, “This has happened before”?  Of course, we all have?  But, this form of entertainment deja vu isn’t because you’ve decided to re-watch, re-read, or re-play.  Join us this week as we discuss the phenomenon of entertainment influencing itself, for better or for worse.  From classic literature to classless television, it seems there are no bounds.  Dust off that tome of Shakespeare, spike up that blow-out, and whatever you, don’t feed the Honey Boo Boo as you settle in for a certified original episode of Monkey in the Cage!

Changing it Up – My Switch to a Different System

I have long touted myself as a devout d20 system player, and never for the life of me could I imagine straying away from the rule-set when it comes to running a game.  Sure, I’m completely open to trying new systems out as a Player, but as a GM, it might be safe to assume that sticking with the rule-set you know best is likely to garner the most success when it comes to running a campaign.  Well, boys and girls, in my quasi-masochistic journey of redefining myself as a GM and Gamer in general, I have decided to break ties with the d20 system I know and love and venture into rules of a more “savage” variety…

Episode 35 – Geek Sub-Cultures

Geeks, Nerds, Dorks, and Dweebs of the world, unite!  Too long have we stood in the shadows of the Jocks and Norm-ies!  Too often have the “Popular” cast us aside!  Now is our time to look beyond our differences and show the world what we’re made of!  Join us this week as we discuss the many layers of Geek subculture.  We peel back the skin of the Funyun and look at the subcultures within the subculture, from Gamers and Cosplayers to Trekkies and Furries.  So, make sure your Battlebot is charged up, strap on your foam sword, and get your character sheets in order because it’s about to get meta up in here on a whole new episode of Monkey in the Cage… Oh, and roll initiative!
