Best game ever? Hunger Games!

Last week a trailer was released for a new movie I had no idea was in existence and it was based on a fairly popular book in the hard core underground geek world. Well me being the pop culture geek I am said screw it and decided I didn’t care and decided not to watch it. Not until every one of my normal websites had posts about the trailer did I decide to venture in to the world of Hunger Games. Once I read io9′s picture take on the trailer I checked Amazon and snatched up the trilogy for $30.

The trilogy starts out with the aptly titled Hunger Games. The story follows Katniss Everdeen as she procures food for her family and eventually takes the place of her sister in the hunger games( oh god chapter 1 spoilers!). If you have ever seen Battle Royale, you will immediately see similarities between the two stories, but the actual world of Panem from Hunger Games feels much more fleshed out than the world of Battle Royale ever did.

Hunger  Games is very well written, but it also really dry. The story and characters are engaging, but it feels like you are reading a journal recounting a past event. There is a lack of emotion from the main character that seems slightly off while reading. That being said there were actually a couple times while reading that I felt a little verklempt.

If you have any interest in the movie after seeing the trailer, I suggest you pick these books up. They are a really quick read and just a good story. You can easily read them in a couple days of good reading.
