Gen Con 2013 is just around the corner, and I'm already losing sleep from the building excitement. Making it to Gen Con has been high on my gamer bucket list for close to two decades and in only a few short months, I'll finally get to experience the geektastic event that is "the best four days in gaming." Let’s be honest. No matter how much you love comics, there’s no way you’ll ever be able to read them all. There’s just far too many and you’d have to sell pretty much all your organs on the black market to be able to afford them. A few weeks back, Robert and I attended OrcCon 2013 out near LAX and had the privilege of playing in a Star Hero game run by JiB of Happy Jacks RPG Podcast fame. Prior to the convention, I knew three things: first, JiB was running a game, so I wanted to be in it. Why Halflings Aren't Hobbits

For decades, the image of Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin were the sole representations of what a hobbit/halfling was. Naturally, this characterization became the standard for the original run of Dungeons & Dragons canon. From the player character race and art to the wealth of literature (R.A. Salvatore's Regis in particular), the traditional, simple, furry-footed eating machine gamers had grown to love remained the standard. The early nineties saw a slight shift in the characterization, but it was in the year 2000 that gamers saw one of the greatest shifts in demi-human representations, courtesy of D&D 3rd Edition. I Took a Stab at Conan and Conan Won

So, the crew over at Gamerstable wrapped up their Conan Character Submission Contest this week in preparation for their next Savage Worlds actual play podcast. I (and apparently plenty of other gamers out there) caught wind of the contest and decided to jump headlong into the creation process, albeit with two minor problems. The first problem, I had only ever created five Savage Worlds characters, so I'm pretty much a n00b to the system. The second problem, the extent of my knowledge regarding the Conan universe is limited to the 1980's films Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer. Ignoring these minor inconveniences, I forged ahead (thanks to my copy of Hero Lab and plenty of time spent at the Conan Wiki). Although I was not one of the lucky winners, I'm still proud of the characters I drafted and have decided to share them here, in all their fleshed out and statted glory. Continue reading →

Wii U Review - Part 1

This month I turned the big 3-0. To combat my feelings of getting utterly old, I decided to buy myself an early birthday gift. So on New Year's Eve I finally broke down and bought a shiny new Wii U. Like many people my age, I've been a huge fan of Nintendo since my childhood. Jumping on goombas, shooting virtual ducks, and unearthing hidden tunnels with bombs was just part of growing up. While I don't necessarily play that many video games these days, anytime Nintendo releases something new, I get that excitement that brings me back to sitting on the floor of my grandma's living room playing my NES for hours on end. This is the start of a three part series about board game designer Reiner Knizia’s tile-laying trilogy. Reiner Knizia is probably the most famous and prolific board game designer ever, having designed over four hundred games that include dice, card, board, auction, and mobile (iOS) games. In 1997 and 1998 he published three games, Tigris and Euphrates, Samurai, and Through the Desert, that all used a tile-laying mechanic. What Was Missing from The Hobbit

I’m a humungous fan of the Tolkien universe, not just for the stories of middle earth that he created, but also because Tolkien’s world led to the fantasy genre where I spend an incredible amount of time indulging. I take great pleasure writing stories, playing games, reading, and imagining in the world of swords and sorcery. And along with many of my fellow Hobbit nerds, I could not wait to see The Hobbit. The Art That Would Shape My High School Years.

Larry Elmore recently posted a Kickstarter project to fund an art book full of his paintings and it has really kicked me in the teeth with some nostalgia. Elmore along with Jeff Easley, and Clyde Caldwell were the artist that defined AD&D 2nd Edition for me. A number of their paintings have become instantly recognizable to me and always send me back to the days of going to my local hobby shop (They sold trains and RC stuff too!) to thumb through the new TSR hardcovers and counting out pennies with friends to see if we could afford it. If you were online at all Monday, you may be aware that DC Comics released writer and creator Gail Simone from the “Batgirl” title. My reaction: shock, fear, shock, disbelief, utter disappointment [for DC Comics], and a glimmer of excitement [Marvel, you are calling her, right?]. Gail Simone, if you are unaware of who she is, is one of the most popular writers at DCU. During her career she has written “Deadpool,” “Birds of Prey,” “Wonderwoman,” “The Secret Six,” and of course, “Batgirl.” She is among the loudest supporters of DCU and particularly of the New52. Gail has been out there waving the banner and beating the drum to encourage her loyal fans to continue after DC (for a lack of a better word) destroyed their continuity. Earlier this year, many of us participated in, or were at least aware of, a Kickstarter event to help place the history of one of our favorite hobbies on film. I was so excited by the prospect I ended up being the third person to put money to the project and certainly spent a fair amount of time and energy promoting it in my own small way. The reason for my fervor had a lot to do with my love for documentary film, and that love of documentary film can be traced back to one solitary yearly event, the True\False Film Festival. Last week, I mentioned that my 21 month old is quite adept at using the family iPad. The little guy even knows how to do this "swipey thing" to move between open apps. I don't even know how to do the "swipey thing" and when I lament that fact while begging him to show me how he's doing it, he just slyly laughs. Seriously, he has his father's sense of humor which tells me I am doomed to a lifetime of being picked on by both of them. Well, it looks like I have to wait until February for The Walking Dead to come back, and as much as that's going to suck, it does give my brain a chance to think on other end-of-the-world scenarios. Possible Stories for Star Wars Episode 7

Disney has purchased Lucasfilm for 4 billion in dollars and stock options, and is already moving towards filming Star Wars episodes 7-9, with episode 7 to be released in 2015. Disney has already shown with the purchase of Marvel that they are more than capable of using an existing property to create high quality movies that generate lots of revenue, so the purchase of Lucasfilm makes sense. You quietly follow the trail back to the camp. Peaking through the foliage you count ten, maybe twelve Goblins, and half are sleeping or otherwise indisposed. Whispering to the party you come up with a plan to surround the camp and quickly dispatch the menace before you finally "liberate" the Holy MacGuffin. At this point the warrior yells "Screw it!" and runs in swinging his sword at anything that moves. With a sigh the rest of the party joins the fray and slaughters the creatures to the last drunken Goblin. It seems that Día de los Muertos has steadily been growing in popularity over the last few years and with good reason. The holiday is both merry and macabre, a celebration of the dead by the living. Seeing as the crew over at ​Gamerstable​ happens to be running an undoubtedly awesome ​Mutants and Masterminds​ game set in the Second World War, I couldn't help but have a half hour nerdgasm full of talking at my car stereo like I was right there with them during their recording session.
