Episode 50 – Why We Love RPGs

Of the multitude of geek hobbies and influences that guide the MITC crew through their everyday lives, there is one in particular that has served as glue to keep us together.  It’s the ketchup to our mustard, the salt to our pepper, the dungeon to our dragon, and while we’ve talked about it plenty, our listener David from Quebec wants to know more!  Join us this week as we open up, share our feelings, and discuss what it is about role playing games that “does it” for us.  Snatch up those character sheets, buy some new sets of dice, and get ready for some sexual tension on an all new episode of Monkey in the Cage!

(03:17) – Matt gained 400lbs, might be a pirate, and will go bankrupt at Staples. – Deep South Barrels and Monte Cook’s Numenera

(08:49) – Ramses is hooked on video games this week of the iOS and Lego persuasion. – Square Enix’s Guardian Cross, Lego Star Wars III, and Lego Indiana Jones

(21:22) – Robert gives Amanda, “The Girlfriend,” the gaming bug (not a euphemism) and watches history in the making! – SoCal Smackdown, Malifaux, and the last flight of Endeavour, and Down.

(30:04) – It’s topic time!  Matt comes out of his shell, Robert enjoys the intimacy, Karen likes to keep it unique, and Ramses likes finishing with the group.  Plus, “Choose Your Own Adventure” fail!

(33:41) – We discuss how our approach to the game has changed with age and maturity and the way it helps us be and stay creative.

(39:53) – Rules or no rules? Three words: Let it Happen! – Savage Worlds and The World of Darkness

(42:10) – Karen loves the storytelling while Ramses enjoys the multiple facets of gaming.  Meanwhile Matt and Robert admit some of their GMing hiccups while we discuss the gaming community at large.

(47:20) – Variety is the spice of life, especially with settings and game mechanics.  Plus, Ramses steps up to the GMing challenge. - Cyberpunk and Fiasco

(51:48) – Karen loves to beat that ass, the memories are what’s important, unless you’re Robert.  Also, Ramses takes things to a whole new level!

(54:40) – We discuss the benefits of total immersion within the game, for both escapism and catharsis.  Just don’t pull a Tom Hanks!  Plus, getting meta can end friendships and we talk “charisma” and nudity.
