Every so often there games that offer such an interesting play or pretty graphics that I feel compelling to purchase them. Some of these I have been burned on such as Afrika, while others like Heavy Rain were enjoyable for what they were attempting. My most recent purchase is The Act on iOS.
The Act is a beautifully animated interactive story that very much reminds me of Pink Panther in the character interactions and animation. All of the characters are perfectly detailed and really pop off the screen. The backgrounds are all wonderfully painted and bring a nice back drop to the scene. One of the more surprising aspects of the game was the music. The characters don’t speak, so they only communicate through actions and emotion. This leads to the musical score picking up the audio slack. Violins, saxophones, and drums all lead to some outstanding music.
The controls are very simple and intuitive. You swipe left or right on the screen to control your boldness. Depending on the situation you will need to jump back and between shying away from confrontation to hitting it head on. Wooing a girl may require some subtle glances, to turning to face her, to a longing glance, back to just facing her, then to dancing. All of the animation is great and even the scene for failure still makes it fun.
I really only have two major complaints about The Act. The first is the scene above. You are pushing a gurney through a crowded hospital and you swipe back and forth to dodge what ever is in the way. The mechanic is so weak compared to the rest of the game and really is just not fun. There are interesting things happening throughout this sequence, but you can see any of them because you are too concerned with dodging them. The other issue I have is with the length. It really only lasts between 20-30 minutes with minimal replay value. I am happy with my purchase since I bought it on sale for 99 cents, but the normal cost of $2.99 seems a bit steep.
The Act is a beautiful and fun game, but I can only recommend it at the 99 cent price point. I give The Act 12 sexy nurses out of 7 proctologists.
